YOUNG TRANSLATORS CONTEST
It has become almost a tradition for our students in their fourth years to be the winners of the Young Translators Contest for translation and interpretation students, an annual event organized by Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Directorate for EU Affairs. Bilkent University Department of Translation and Interpretation has an outstanding track record in these contests. The contest has been organized since 2010 and to date, Bilkent has had 14 wins. The “Negotiating Framework” dated October 3rd, 2005 stipulates that “Türkiye will need to produce translations of the acquis into Turkish in good time before accession, and will need to train a sufficient number of translators and interpreters required for the proper functioning of the EU institutions upon its accession”.
To honor this requirement, the Directorate for EU Affairs organizes Young Translators Contest every year to bring the attention of the translation and interpretation students to the accession negotiations and the importance of translation during this process. Students are asked to translate EU texts from one of the three working languages of the European Union (English, French and German) into Turkish. Winners are invited to a visit to Brussels to see the EU institutions in action.
